PRT has finalized its permit application for beach restoration and stabilization at Hunting Island. The public notice was issued by the US Army Corps of Engineers on April 22. At least six months will be required for agency review and public hearings.

The final project plan incorporates elements from a 1998 preliminary plan and a more recent US Army Corps of Engineers plan. It calls for up to 1,500,000 cubic yards of nourishment sand from an offshore borrow source and installation of nine groins. The project will encompass up to 17,000 linear feet of shoreline (~80% of Hunting Island's length). Groins spaced ~1,200 ft apart will be placed at North Beach (vicinity of the light house), South Beach (primary beach access), along the campground at the north end, and near a breach point at the head of the lagoon. The accompanying map illustrates the overall plan.

Because of budget limitations, the full scope of the project may have to be reduced after permits are obtained. PRT has established priority areas for protection, and the final bid packages will reflect these priorities according to agency officials. Protecting the lighthouse and maintaining safe swimming areas are the top priorities.

More explanation of the design will be provided in this space over the next several months. In the meantime, to view the entire permit application, use the following links (all documents are in PDF file format):
